Essential Oil: Bottom Notes
Base notes feel like home to me. They are the foundation, the depth, the part of a scent that lingers long after everything else has softened. In my Aroma Alchemy practice, this is where I go when I need to feel grounded, centered, and fully rooted in my body.
If top notes are the spark and middle notes are the heart, base notes are the anchor. They move slowly, unfold gradually, and stay with you the longest. There’s a richness to them that feels steady and supportive. When I wear or work with base notes, I feel held. My energy settles. My breath deepens.
These oils are typically warm, earthy, woody, or resinous. Some of the most powerful and ancient ones include frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood, patchouli, and vetiver.
Frankincense has been used for thousands of years in spiritual and ceremonial practices, especially in ancient Egypt and across the Middle East. It was burned in temples, used in meditation, and valued as a sacred offering. There’s something about it that instantly shifts the atmosphere. It feels expansive and deeply calming at the same time, helping me connect to something higher while staying grounded.
Myrrh carries a similar ancient energy. It was used in embalming rituals, healing preparations, and sacred ceremonies. Its scent is rich, slightly smoky, and deeply meditative. When I use myrrh, I feel a sense of stillness and protection, like I’ve stepped into a quiet, sacred space.
Sandalwood is not my favorite smell, but it is soft, creamy, and grounding. It has this smooth warmth that lingers beautifully and supports mental clarity and calm. Patchouli, maybe my all time favorite oil is deeper and more earthy, often associated with grounding, sensuality, and connection to the body. Vetiver is one of the most grounding oils I know. It has a deep, root-like aroma that feels stabilizing, especially when I need to slow down or come back to myself.
What I love most about base notes is their staying power. They don’t rush in. They build slowly and remain, creating a lasting impression that feels both comforting and powerful.
When I create blends or move through my rituals, base notes are what ground the entire experience. They help me feel anchored in my body, present in the moment, and connected to something deeper. This is where everything settles. This is where I return to myself.
